I’m a big fan of Cinema. Be it a comedy, romance, action or even a family drama, I love watching wide variety of movies, but with one essential and yet predictable condition – it has to be a good cinema.
Like you, even I have a very distinctive taste to judge a movie. Personally, an uncomplicated story with captivating narration is decisive for my choice of a good movie, and irrespective of genre, a movie claiming or in real being different is not important. Other crucial elements are casting, performance, cinematography and music, but not necessarily the songs.
Starting today, Thursday the 28th March 2013, for next five nights, I have decided to watch ‘one-good-movie-a-day’. Without altering the line-up or missing a single day, I hope to catch-up with four good movies that I have already watched, and one that’s just been released in theatres. Also, the idea is not to repeat a genre or the language, thus making it more engaging.
Day 1 | Thursday, 28-03-2013 | Road, Movie | Hindi – 2010
Key Artists: Abhay Deol, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Satish Kaushik & Mohammed Faisal
Released three years back in theatres, Road, Movie is my all-time favourite cinema of Abhay Deol, so far. It celebrates the spirit of life in the unforgiving harsh environments of rustic and yet, very scenic Rajasthan. Directed by Dev Bengal, Road, Movie is a work of genius proportions and an ideal start to my ‘one-good-movie-a-day’ schedule.
Road, Movie is the journey of self-discovery for Vishnu – a selfish, carefree and bored young man. Transporting an old touring cinema wagon to a museum, in the middle of a blistering dessert, he bumps into various characters – a young boy, middle-aged mechanic, pretty gypsy girl, water lords and corrupt police. And during the long voyage, they all strive to revive their life, love and dreams.
Watch it for the ‘feel-good’ experience, grand cinematography, awesome music by Michael Brook and the splendid performance by every artist.

Day 2 | Friday, 29-03-2013 | Thamizh Padam(Literally, Tamil Cinema) | Tamil – 2010
Key Artists: Shiva, Venniradai Moorthy, Disha Pandey, Paravai Muniyamma, M.S Bhaskar & Manobala
When a debutant director thinks out-of-the-box and delivers, what you get is a mother of all the parodies in Indian cinema – Thamizh Padam. Directed by Amudhan, this movie was a dramatic success in its own genre. A two hour laugh riot, Thamizh Padam is an ideal Friday night movie to unwind the weeklong work stress.
Using comedy as the key element, this movie spoofs highly stereotypical scenes and themes of Tamil cinema. Shiva, a lazy young man and his three worthless friends waste their time playing carom, smoking cigarettes and chasing girls. One fine day, their everyday routine takes an unexpected turn when Shiva falls in love with a rich girl and to marry her, he has to find his missing parents. Predictably, he goes on an epic journey in search his family to Cinemapatti, a village unlike any other.
Watch it for the uniqueness, comic parody of blockbuster movies and legendry artists, a spoof song without any lyrics and a thrilling suspense at the end!

Day 3 | Saturday, 30-03-2013 | Oscar | English – 1991
Key Artists: Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Ornella Muti, Peter Riegert, Chazz Palminteri & Tim Curry
What happens when a highly respected, but awfully stereotyped actor tries his hand at something different? To figure out, you need to watch Oscar, a movie starring Sylvester Stallone. This film is a comedy masterpiece and astonishingly, Sylvester Stallone excels in an impressive comic act. A welcome change from his run-of-the-mill action roles, this alone is a reason enough to watch Oscar this Saturday night!
Snaps, a mob boss is forced to give-up his criminal life and go straight, but unfortunately, it’s not going to be easy. For one, his charmingly attractive but dumb daughter loves his chauffeur, and two, the cops think he is trying a major crime move. To add to his woes, he is surrounded with henchmen with no brains, overzealous tutor, a deceptive accountant and dozen other half nitwits. But the real danger for Snaps is the time – he has just five hours to set his life straight!
Watch it for Sylvester Stallone as Snaps – the mafia leader, dozen other brilliant actors and everything else!

Day 4 | Sunday, 31-03-2013 | Simple Aag Ond Love Story (A Simple Love Story!) | Kannada, 2013
Key Artists: Rakshith Shetty & Shwetha Srivastav
Out of all the five movies I have selected for ‘one-good-movie-a-day’ line-up, Simple Aag Ond Love Story is unusual. This Kannada movie was released on 8th of this March and I’m yet to watch it. But what I did watch was the eight minute long ‘feeler’ on YouTube, and it looks brilliant. The lead pair is awesome, dialogues are amusing, the cinematography is nice and overall, the movie appear to be simple and fresh. Also, the reviews are encouraging, songs are good and as I have seen on online ticket booking websites, Simple Aag Ond Love Story is getting a fair share of audience support – reasons enough to watch it on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Day 5 | Monday, 01-04-2013 | Pushpaka Vimana | Silent (No Dialogues), 1987
Key Artists: Kamal Haasan, Amala, K.S Ramesh, Farida Jalal, Tinu Anand, Loknath & Sameer Khakhar
In a true sense, Pushpaka Vimana is a movie made for the world – all you need to understand is the sheer brilliance of artists in their silent best! This movie is a result of combining exceptional talent with a flawless experiment, as executed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, a director par excellence. It’s a great work of art, and for this reason alone, I have specifically selected Pushpaka Vimana to beat my Monday blues!
There is a lot already written about Pushpaka Vimana and I, personally, don’t have much to add except that it’s a must watch classic!
